A total of 41 local secondary school students have this month been presented with a Tertiary Study Award thanks to the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust.
Each student’s Tertiary Study Award is valued at $2,000 per year for a maximum tenure of four years.
The Trust presented studentswith their awardat a special ceremony held at the Rotorua Convention Centre on Monday 9 February.
Trust deputy chairman Jo-Anne La Grouwsaid the Trust is pleased to have offered nearly 900 Tertiary Study Awards since the scheme began in 1996.
“These awards are available to students who have attended a secondary school in the Rotorua District and are going into full time undergraduate studies at any New Zealand Tertiary Institution.
“We are proud to announce that we have offered almost $6million in Tertiary Study Awards to Rotorua students since we began the scheme nearly two decades ago,” she said.
Awards are made based on applicant’s academic achievement, leadership skills and community involvement, which includes their involvement in school activities.
Mrs La Grouw said the selection panel has this year, once again, been very impressed by the calibre of the applications.
“The quality of applications we see coming through is largely due to a team of people at each secondary school working very hard to support students at their respective schools,” she said.
“I would especially like to thank fellow members of the selection panel, Trust chairmanGrahame Hall and TrusteeSandra Kai Fong, as well as Trust staff, for their support this year in the selection process.”
