Tipu Wai – Spring planting in Rotorua
With spring comes fresh energy for planting. In September, the Tipu Wai team and local volunteers came together at 8 Mile Gate and Hemo Gorge, adding new life to two stunning locations alongside some of our most loved trails.
Mountain Bike Rotorua and Balanced Forestry NZ both “closed for good”, leaving work for the day, so their teams could be part of the mahi. Their support, alongside Tipu Wai volunteers who have been rolling up their sleeves, makes these planting days a true community effort.
Rotorua Trust has provided support for Tipu Wai’s operating costs, helping this hands-on local trust continue its important mahi. Tipu Wai’s work aligns with Rotorua Trust’s environment priority: protecting and enhancing the taonga of lakes, rivers, flora, and fauna, and nurturing the environment for current and future generations.
Tipu Waiāriki exists to restore and regenerate our waterways and native fish species. Their mission is to grow and plant more than 100,000 locally sourced native seedlings in the coming years.
Tipu means to grow, increase or prosper.
Waiāriki is the catchment of focus, while wai is the water – the streams, creeks and rivers that sustain us.
Together, Tipu Wai is about bringing prosperity and water together, helping the environment to flourish once again. They are out there mulching weeds, planting natives, and are passionate about restoration.
