Digital Natives Academy – Building digital pathways for rangatahi
In July 2025, Stewart Edward and Mike Keefe from Rotorua Trust enjoyed a visit to Digital Natives Academy (DNA) to learn more about the impact of their mahi supporting rangatahi into digital futures.
Originally set up to teach basic coding skills, DNA has evolved into a learning hub for young people aged 15–24 who are not currently in education, employment or training. From music production and coding to 3D printing and game design, the programme offers real-world digital skills alongside holistic support, including CV writing and driver licensing.
With a reported 91.7% pass rate and strong attendance levels, DNA are working with 2,000+ young people each year.
Rotorua Trust Deputy Chairperson Mike Keefe said,
“What stood out was the way DNA uses technology as a tool for connection, learning, and opportunity. It’s not just about skills — it’s about supporting rangatahi to believe in themselves and see what’s possible.”
DNA’s kaupapa aligns with Rotorua Trust’s Education priority, which focuses on providing opportunities for tamariki and rangatahi to be engaged in education and learning and creating pathways for them to thrive.
