Since its launch in 2019, the Aquabots programme has captivated the imaginations of over 450 local student participants, challenging them to construct underwater robots and take on exciting aquatic tasks.
With assistance from a $15,000 grant from Rotorua Trust, Aquabots 2.0 kits were introduced in 2022, providing an exciting opportunity for contestants who had been involved in the programme for at least three years. Developed in collaboration with Massey University, these advanced robots have features such as a camera, meeting the stringent requirements for entry into the international underwater robotics competition, MATE ROV. Eight teams, including a trio of Year 6 boys from the Te Aka Mauri afterschool programme, are utilising these AquaBots 2.0 kits.
More than just a competition, an Aquabots event offers students a comprehensive engineering experience, with participants engaging in underwater challenges, a team presentation, a factsheet, and a technical report for senior teams. Each challenge serves as a test of the participant’s ability to design, build, and operate their Aquabots, while the team presentation segment evaluates their organisational and documentation skills, enabling them to communicate their engineering ideas effectively.
Aquabots not only offers a comprehensive experience of the engineering process but also acts as a nationwide platform for students to demonstrate their learning to professionals, educators, peers, and the wider public. It serves as an invaluable introduction to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Through Aquabots, students explore scientific and mathematical concepts within a relatable context while discovering many exciting engineering career possibilities.
The Regional competition held in September marked the culmination of countless hours of dedication from students, teachers, and supportive parents. This eagerly anticipated event, one of the highlights on the Library’s calendar, involved dedicating a lot of time from those involved, including registration management, course design, and recruitment of volunteer judges.
Next on the agenda was the National competition in early December 2022, hosted by Te Aka Mauri in the Bay of Plenty. Six Rotorua teams, armed with Aquabots 2.0 robots supported by Rotorua Trust, competed in the open division. The outstanding performance of Team Tahi propelled them to victory, securing their place in the upcoming international competition.
