Empowering Women and Single Mothers through Waahi Aroha

Over the past year, a Rotorua Trust grant has enabled the operations of Kimiora’s Waahi Aroha initiatives, spearheaded by Mai, their passionate Team Leader. The grant has also enabled the expansion of Rourou, their Māra Kai program, which provides women with the opportunity to learn the art of kayak fishing and fosters the provision of fresh fish for families. Additionally, the grant has facilitated the growth of Flying Solo, empowering single mothers through support, advocacy, and various workshops.

Waahi Aroha has seen a surge in participation, with the number of single mothers in the program growing from 6 to 40. The grant has facilitated the distribution of weekly food parcels and the delivery of planter boxes to homes, enriching the lives of many families. Moreover, the grant has allowed Waahi Aroha to create leadership opportunities for women, fostering a supportive community where knowledge and wisdom are shared.

Looking to the future, Mai and her team are working diligently to expand Flying Solo nationwide, with the aim of reaching and supporting even more single mothers across the country.
