Supporting Settlement and Success: English Language Partner Rotorua’s Commitment to Language Education

English Language Partners (ELP) Rotorua provides English language education to former refugees and migrants living in Rotorua. Its programs are designed to help learners develop the communication skills needed to participate in everyday life, employment, and further education in Aotearoa New Zealand.

With operational funding from Rotorua Trust, ELP Rotorua continues to deliver services that contribute to community integration and social cohesion.

Centre Manager Jia Rong Yap explains:

“Our goal is to support successful settlement and participation in New Zealand society by enhancing learners’ communication skills, confidence, and ability to navigate everyday life.”

    Program Overview

ELP Rotorua offers several free English language programs tailored to adult learners:

    • Group Classes at The Arts Village focus on practical Kiwi English for daily interactions.
    • In-Home Tutoring provides personalised lessons from trained volunteers, supporting those who may face barriers to attending classes.
    • Workplace English Support helps learners build language skills relevant to employment and workplace settings.

Each learner begins with an individual assessment to determine their English proficiency, literacy level, and learning goals. Lessons are then designed around real-life scenarios such as healthcare visits, parent-teacher interviews, and shopping.

“Collaborations with community partners and employers help design thematic units relevant to real-life situations,” says Jia.

    Learning Environment and Support

Creating a safe and inclusive learning environment is central to ELP Rotorua’s approach. Learners are encouraged to participate at their own pace, supported by trained educators and volunteers.

Jia shares a moment that reflects this approach:

“I observed a group of learners who, after initial hesitation, began to feel comfortable sharing their personal stories… It was evident that they were gaining confidence in their English skills and developing a sense of belonging within the community.”

Volunteers and educators help bridge cultural gaps and model everyday English in authentic contexts. Language barriers and cultural adjustment challenges are addressed through one-on-one support and the integration of local cultural knowledge into lessons.

    Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers play a central role in ELP Rotorua’s delivery model. The organisation provides free training and matches volunteers with learners for in-home tutoring or classroom support.

“The centre provides free training for volunteers and matches them with learners, facilitating meaningful connections that enhance language acquisition and cultural integration,” says Jia.

No teaching experience is required—just a willingness to support others in their learning journey. Volunteering offers a practical way to contribute to Rotorua’s diverse and inclusive community.

    Innovation and Future Plans

ELP Rotorua is currently piloting the use of generative AI tools to assist with lesson planning and the creation of personalised learning resources. This initiative aims to improve the efficiency and adaptability of teaching materials.

“This innovation aims to extend ELP Rotorua’s impact and equip educators with effective tools to meet diverse learner needs.”

    Community Impact

Learners who participate in ELP Rotorua’s programs often report increased confidence and independence.

“Beyond individual growth, the programs foster intercultural understanding and stronger social cohesion in Rotorua.”
