Club maps busy future

A grant of $2,900 from the Rotorua Trust is helping Orienteering Bay of Plenty (OBOP) navigate its way through a busy period of growth and upcoming major events.

While the club has about 80 paid members, its events attract around 1,500 people a year, competing in traditional foot orienteering, and the increasingly popular mountain biking version.

In orienteering, participants plan routes and navigate between control points marked on unique, highly detailed maps in the shortest time possible.

With specialist maps being central to the sport, OBOP sought Rotorua Trust funding to go towards producing maps for upcoming events, including the Central Bay of Plenty Schools Champs and the New Zealand Mountain Bike Orienteering Champs in November this year.

OBOP Club President Erin Swanson says the maps cover the popular Tihiotonga Centennial Park, Waiariki Campus and adjacent campground area on the outskirts of the city, and Tui Ridge in Hamurana.

The Trust funding has gone towards the total project costs of $6,000 for developing the new maps. “We are extremely grateful to the Rotorua Trust for making the funds available,” says Erin.
